Introduction for the Maya Heritage Center
Welcome to Maya Heritage Center
At the crossroads of cultural preservation, community empowerment, and archaeological exploration, the Maya Heritage Center stands as a beacon dedicated to unraveling the rich tapestry of the Maya World. Born out of the collective vision of Manejo Cultural, AC. Archaeologists Without Borders of the Maya World, (legally registered in Mexico as Friends of Archaeologists Without Borders) the Maya Heritage Center is more than an institution; it's a testament to the enduring legacy of the Maya culture.
Our Mission:
Preserving Maya Heritage Past and Present
Preserving the past, empowering the present, and shaping the future, the Maya Heritage Center is on a mission to safeguard and celebrate the profound cultural heritage of the Maya people.
Our Goals:
1. Community Education, Empowerment and Capacity Building
Community Education: Delivering educational resources and tools to empower Maya children, fostering literacy, science, and math proficiency while preserving cultural heritage. We aspire to empower Maya communities across Central America and the USA through education, ensuring access to knowledge about their cultural heritage. We want to bridge educational gaps providing essential resources such as Chromebooks computers and BrainPOP software. Providing essential resources for schools in rural communities, transforming the classroom teaching with a technological interactive app providing a richer learning experience and increasing educational proficiency.
Community Empowerment: Empower Maya communities through education, awareness, and sustainable development initiatives.
Capacity Building: Establish and sustain the Polytechnical University of the Maya World (PUMW) Curriculum Program over a 10-year period, fostering academic excellence, cultural preservation, and community development.
2. Supporting Accessible Academic Excellence.
We are committed to fostering collaboration in research, with a focus on generating and transmitting high-quality and accessible information. The program aims to raise awareness discussing cultural and social complexities of Maya communities. MHC created in January 2023 an interactive and engaging platform for knowledge-sharing and discussions on archaeology, cultural heritage, and contemporary issues in the Maya World and other cultures. This social media platform named the Hangout Program using Google Meet, now using Zoom, is hosted by professors with presenters and monthly guests inviting public and student participation. This program is free and open to all.
3. Collaboration and Global Engagement
Cross-Cultural Collaboration: Foster collaboration among archaeologists, scholars, and communities to create a global dialogue on Maya heritage.
Cultural Preservation: Document, conserve, and promote the invaluable archaeological and cultural treasures of the Maya World.
For the last seven years, MHC has fund raised, hosted and coordinated an international Annual Symposium in Cancun and Puerto Morelos, Mexico, and in 2024 in Merida, Yucatan. In 2023 MHC launched, the Journal of Maya Heritage in collaboration with Kennesaw State University. To facilitate the preservation and promotion of Maya heritage, and create pathways for an international audience to exchange relevant strategies, problem solve and explore the common denominators and examples around the world on sustainable cultural preservation. Much of the information presented at these conferences is being published in multiple formats.
